5/1/2020 0 Comments As the Chair Turns - May 2020Hello. Hello. Hello.
I hope this finds all of you in good health and reasonably sane. I cannot wait to hear about all of the fun and exciting things you’ve been discovering about yourselves these last few weeks. We will definitely have plenty to talk about when we're finally able to see each other. It goes without saying that the last few weeks have been an unbelievable roller coaster ride, as I’m sure has been the case with many of you. I shared with you just a few days ago that my father had passed away. He was admitted to the hospital on March 20th and a month later he was no longer with us. Obviously some days have been easier than others. Mom and I are doing pretty good. We’ve laughed. We’ve cried. We’ve been quiet while on the phone with each other. The love pouring in has helped hold us up during this time. Thank you! I also let you know the salon will be closed through the end of May due to the updated Stay at Home Order. Your generosity and thoughtfulness during these times is beyond words. I am so fortunate to have all of you in my life. And finally, just this week, as a self-employed independent contractor, I was able to file for unemployment. I certified 6 weeks yesterday and should, hopefully, be receiving the financial assistance that is so long over due soon. I’ve been managing OK during this pandemic but that has not been the case with so many others. This month’s newsletter took a complete 180 when the Stay at Home Order was extended. I had planned on letting you know what to expect during your appointment and the things we would be doing in the salon to assure your safety, but I will have to save that for a later day. So instead of all that I have articles that will hopefully give you some tips on getting through another month at home. I am available by email, text or phone if you have any questions or concerns. Or just want to chat. Until we meet again…

How are you doing? This was probably one of the most challenging newsletters I’ve had to put together in a while. Typically, I have a list of articles I want to share with you. The list gets shuffled around all the time depending what’s new & interesting and what I want to pass along each month. Most of the content comes from conversations you and I have while you’re in the salon. But this month the focus kept shifting as the days went by.
So, yeah, preparing for this month's newsletter was different. We haven’t had much “you and me” time. I really wanted to have articles for you that were especially relevant to questions you might have right now during these challenging times. I hope you’ll find the selection of articles helpful. In a separate email, I sent an update on the Shelter-in-Place order and the salon remaining closed until May 1st. I’ve opened my schedule for May 1st for those of you who would like to get something on your calendar. There's a button to click below. I know it’s still another month away and we’re all going to look quite shaggy, but rest assured I’ve been studying up on a few haircuts and The Shag is one of them. I also found a tutorial on how to do the “Tiger King Mullet”. (please, please, please do not ask for that look.) I've also posted a "Caveman Challenge" to you on Instagram. I want to close here by letting you know how fortunate I am to have each and everyone of you sitting in my chair. You have been tremendously supportive during this challenging time and I will be forever grateful. I am available by email or text if you have any questions or concerns. I hope this finds you and yours healthy and in reasonably good spirits. Until we meet again… I have a little bit of everything for you this month.
About 2 ½ years ago I heard about a KickStarter called “Hair Love”. I don’t think any of us that funded the project knew it would be so timely and received so well. You can see the Oscar winning short film below. Deep conditioning is underrated. No matter the condition of your hair, most of us can use a little extra loving up there. I have a nice How To article that even includes a few DIY recipes. Guys - You should never settle for “Just OK” hair. With just a little extra effort (and following a few of the tips below) there’s no reason you shouldn’t have best hair possible. Continuing with my “Follically Challenged” Section I have a New York Times article about a woman who was losing hair by the fistfuls and what may have been the cause. I’ll just say one word: STRESS I think you all know I’m a Bay Area sports fan. I’ve also shared articles with you on the benefits of CBD Oil. Just like you and I, athletes are searching for less addictive methods to deal with aches and pains. Attitudes about cannabis are changing. Hopefully the article I have for you will shed a little light on a very complicated topic. The Butt Cut? What the heck is that? I’d never heard the expression and had to look it up. That’s just some of what I have for you this month in “As the Chair Turns”. Enjoy! What’s old is new again. That goes for you and me, too, right? When you realize the music of your youth is now called classic or the clothes you wore in High School are now retro it takes a little getting used to. Now, the first hairdryer I used in the 70’s has been revamped and is now a bestseller. Thanks to Dyson’s Airwarp (at a hefty $400 bucks) that came out a couple years ago, these hairdryer/brush combos are popular again. Have you heard, stress causes grey hair! I think you and I had a hunch but there is now a scientific study to back that up. Researchers believe the effects are linked to melanocyte stem cells, which produce melanin and are responsible for hair and skin color. Hair color change may be linked to nerves in the “fight or flight” response system. I have a couple articles for you on stress and grey hair. Did you know there was a thing called a Guillotine Haircut? How about “Fashion Victim”? Curious, aren’t you? Bangs. Bangs. Bangs. I've shared a few articles about the dos and don’ts of bangs in the past. One very important thing is to talk to a professional (that would be me) before making the cut. Bangs come in many shapes and lengths, from baby bangs to side-swept. Bangs are great for framing your face and accentuating a haircut. However, you have to know there is a commitment. I have an article for you on one women’s experience getting French-Girl bangs. I’ve added a new section for the “Follically Challenged”. The market for hair transplants is expected to surpass $31 billion by 2025. That means more and more of you are going to be researching and looking into different means of maintaining, preserving and growing those precious hair follicles. I want to be an information resource for you. If you have a question, please ask and I’ll get you an answer. That’s just some of what I have for you this month in “As the Chair Turns”. Enjoy! The Story of Hair: How Guillotine Haircuts Became the Rage in France Happy New Year!!!
A New year, new beginnings, and probably a few New Year’s resolutions for some. 2019 was a year of trials and tribulations, one I hope did not test your courage, endurance or resolve too much. A year in which I hope you found strength and persevered. And learned something new about yourself that you will take with you in to 2020. If you hadn’t already noticed, Scrunchies are cool again. Not just cool, they’re everywhere. They sold 8 times faster than any other hair accessory last year. They are a fashion trend. They are on the runway. AND Jason Momoa had one that matched his tux at the Oscars. The trend lately has been to let hair air dry naturally, but it can take a long time and water causes the cuticle to swell and crack, damaging the hair. Basically when your hair is wet, the fibres swell and are weaker, so letting your hair air dry means its exposure to water goes on for longer, making the risk of damage greater. Interesting, right? So when you do give yourself a blowout I want to make sure you’re not doing any more damage. Check out the article on the 11 things you should NEVER do when giving yourself a blowout. Have you heard of bacne? It’s a term coined in the internet age and could be caused by your conditioner. Guys, I have a short YouTube video for you on now to reinvent your 2020 image. It wouldn't seem right if I started the year without having something about the Best of 2019. The Washington Post compiled a nice list of the best movies, books, music, songs, and video games from 2019. Did yours make their list? It's no secret that I'm a Golden State Warriors fan. I recently discovered one of the NBA sports analysts I follow, Tom Haberstroh, has a new podcast just for Dads. It's called The Dad Pod. Since I have a few new Dads in my chair, I thought this would be a great podcast to pass along. Of course there’s more, but that’s just some of what I have for you this month in “As the Chair Turns”.
