7/1/2019 0 Comments As the Chair Turns - July 2019Summer is officially here...!!!
(Those of you who vacationed in Europe last month definitely found that out.) I know some months it may seem like I’m repeating myself here, but two common concerns from you while sitting in my chair are about going grey and thinning hair. I’ve tried to include information on both of those topics. This month just happens to be a little more focused on thinning hair and hair loss. There is so much research being done on hair loss in the areas of diagnosing, treating, and even new science that is actually growing human hair follicles. I recently received an email from Tuck, an organization devoted to promoting sleep health awareness. They did some pretty extensive research on sleep and hair loss and asked if I would share their findings with you. Turns out there is a connection between sleep (or the lack of) and hair loss. Have you wondered if wearing a hat contributed to hair loss? Well, dermatologists say… I mentioned growing human hair follicles, right. Columbia University is using 3D printing to grow human hair follicles. This is a really exciting development for hair restoration. Check out the article I have for you about this research. Some of you are considered going blonde. Not only is it a haircolor decision, it's also lifestyle changing. Be sure to read the “Need to Know” tips for going blonde. Hey, did you know San Francisco has a Crosstown trail now? It officially opened last month. There are maps, and apps, and websites to help you plan your city hike. Check it out below. I also have articles on etiquette rules you might be breaking, cool-girl waves, haircuts & face shapes, and more. Take a browse through this month’s newsletter for all of the above and more. Enjoy!

Is your hair ready for summer? For festival season? For vacation?
Yes? No? Well, I have help for you. Whether you’re going on vacation, a cruise, a stay-cation, attending a festival, a hike, or simply gardening in your back yard your hair needs extra attention in the summer. I have a couple articles to help your hair survive festival season. I also have links to articles I’ve shared in the past with great information on what you should be doing to protecting your hair from the elements of summer. June is PRIDE month. This June is the 50th Year Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. KQED has quite a line up of programs to celebrate LGBTQ+ Heritage Month. Check out the program listings in “Coming Soon to a Theater Near You”. We’ve come a long way since Stonewall but still have a long way to go. LGBTQ individuals are constantly under attack here in the United States and throughout the rest of the world. Our LGBTQ youth are having an especially difficult time. The “Episode” I have you this month is an interview with The Trevor Project. The podcast I’m sharing this month, Homo Sapiens, is one of the most intelligent, informative, and fun LGBTQ podcasts I’ve listened to in a very long time. They like to think of theirselves as Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour’ for an LGBTQ+ audience. Take a look at their episode list. LGTBQ or not, you may want to subscribe. Have you wonder what the “IT” haircut is for this summer? Wonder no more. It’s the Bob. Worn sleek or wavy, angled or blunt, this summer’s “IT” style is trending precisely because it’s so damn versatile. Hair-Coloring terms? What do they all mean? I found a great little guide of hair-coloring terms your stylist (that’s me) wants you to know. Not only will you understand the gibberish coming out of my mouth but you’ll be better equipped when we have that consultation about your next color service. You may have heard about micellar-water - dirt grabbing cleansers - in your skincare products. It’s now in some shampoos. It’s like a magnet for dirt and more gentle than clarifying shampoos. I have a couple articles that will hopefully answer some of your questions. The return of the Perm? Yes, back. Don’t forget DAD. Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th. Please don’t buy him another tie. Take a browse through this month’s “Summer” newsletter for all of the above and more. Enjoy! 5/1/2019 0 Comments As the Chair Turns - May 2019Hi Hi,
I hope you've survived your allergies that resulted from the spectacular super bloom we had. Spring is definitely here and a reminder it’s allergy season. I have “seasonal” allergies but here in the Bay Area something is always in bloom so all that means is it’s allergy season pretty much all year round. Thank goodness for local honey, though. A couple tablespoons daily helps manage my allergies. It’s not a cure all when the pollen is really high but it sure helps all those other days. You should give it a try if you’re battling allergies. I came a cross an interesting article regarding an “epidemic” hair loss happening with millennials. To be honest, this isn’t just happening with millennials. Today’s stresses with jobs, finances, and the cost of living are common with all of us. I’ve shared many articles about the affects of stress and hair loss. What’s interesting is this article focuses on a certain age population, the millennial, and how the affects of these stresses are showing up in a younger individuals. I knew iron, or the lack of it, had an affect on hair growth. There really isn’t a simple resolution for an iron deficiency. That said, I did not know that how our body stores iron is even more difficult to diagnose and treat. I found an article regarding low ferritin and hair loss. I hope it answers more questions than it raises. Over the last few months I’ve included articles about CBD oil and its benefits. This month I have an article for you on how long CBD will stay in your system. I’m learning about CBD oil all the time and I hope, along the way, you are doing your own research as well. Did you know that for a Himba woman, her hair is her power? Hairstyles play a significant role within the Himba community and reflect marital status, age, wealth, and rank within the group. Check out the article I have for you. Inside this month you'll also find articles on the best hairstyle for your hair type, styling a perfect messy bun, the influence of k-pop on colour trends, taking better naps and more. Check it all out below. Enjoy! Happy Spring to you all.
Last month I shared a few articles about CBD oil. Now that retailers like CVS and Walgreens will be carrying it you really need to be even more informed about ingredients, purity and what it is you are actually buying. I have another article for you this month that will hopefully help with some of your questions. The way I cut hair has evolved over the years. A lot in part because of trends and how you are wearing and styling your hair. Haircuts are less structured, more tousled, and wash & wear these days. A lot of this has to do with busy schedules and not wanting to spend hours doing your hair. I’m sure you’ve already noticed I include articles on trending hairstyles. The trending cut for women is the Shag. Yes, the Shag is back. It’s easy to care for and, if cut to suit your hair type and texture, will allow you to go a little longer between hair cuts. Even with men’s hairstyles trending longer, guys still asking for a classic haircut. The “barbering” tend of the last few years has been a huge contributing factor. So, while women want hairstyles that are easy to care for and can also stretch out the time between appointments, guys are spending more time in the salon/barber chair maintaining their coif. The way we care for our hair has also changed. Hair products have become more gentle, less damaging, not just to your locks but for the environment. I have an article for you with some helpful tips on washing your hair differently in order to save the environment. Do you know the difference between a mole and skin cancer? The tanning we did in our youth, 20+ years ago, is now showing up as either sun damage or melanoma skin cancer. I’ll keep an eye on your scalp and let you know if I see anything that looks unusual, but there may be other areas on your body that need a real doctor to check out. I, myself, have regular follow up visits with my dermatologist. About a year ago I did a skin treatment, basically liquid kemo, on a few areas on my face. It (and I) wasn’t pretty, but it was a valuable proactive procedure. If you have any doubt about that spot on your skin I have an article for you that might inform you on whether or not you need to make an appointment with your dermatologist. 80’s hair, hair dye, mobile passports, hair extensions, and lice? Yup, lice. All that and more. Check it all out below. Have You Been Following All The Buzz About CBD Oil?
While I was doing some personal research last month on CBD Oil my inbox started filling up with emails about CBD Oil and hair care. The popularity of CBD Oil has taken off the last few months. It’s no wonder why due to its many benefits. I have a few articles for you that should hopefully help answer some questions for you. Finished hair with polished flair is the top hairstyling look for 2019 as seen during Spring/Summer 2019 Fashion Week. “There was a nod to more finished hair this season.” “From the Marc Jacobs Show featuring vintage hair color tones, to the finished hair at Prada, to the fashion-inspired hair at Miu Miu, we saw a mix of natural textures celebrating individuality. With a contrast to these more ‘dressed’ looks, which seem to be well-received. There must be something in the air and a desire for polish.” Check out the article below on prime, proper and shine. I know it’s still winter but many of you swim all year long. I have a nice article with some hair care must knows for you aquatic types. For you Men that are worried or have questions about going gray I have a fairly in-depth article covering should you, shouldn’t you, how often you should and the costs of coloring your gray hair. There’s also a section on embracing your Silver Fox. What about going to bed with wet hair? I bet a few of you have done that. There’s no evidence that people who sleep with wet hair experience more allergy or asthma symptoms. But, what about your pillow? Read on… Have you ever wondered just how bad drugstore shampoos are for your hair? Well, there’s a hairstylist who took a seven day shampoo challenge and I have her findings for your below. All that and more. Check it all out below. Enjoy! |
