A Glimmer of Hope A Shot of Hope A Dose of Hope A Jab of Hope A Path of Hope A Sense of Hope Hope for Spring Signs of Hope I’m guessing you’re picking up on a theme here. Hope. With more and more people receiving their COVID-19 vaccinations you can almost feel a sigh of relief. The last year we’ve been holding our breath, doing all we can to keep ourselves safe, trying not to jeopardize anyone else’s health, and praying we don’t mess up. As frustrating as it’s been at times, and our patience stretched thin, we have done a very good job. We’ve even learn a few new things about ourselves. One thing we’ve learned is that WE can do this. Yes, WE. The collective whole. The pressure relief valve is beginning to naturally release. We must remain diligent a little while longer. If we do, we will see this thing through to the end. So, YES, I am very hopeful today. ++++++++++++ It seems like every month I’m looking for articles to share with you there is another “trend” for *fill in the season*. The fun part for me, as a hairstylist, is that I learn something new from each of those new “trends”. And for you, and you might not even know it’s happening, I pass along little bits and pieces of those “trends” to you while you’re having your hair done. Women’s hair is “trending” short and sassy for Spring. Whether it’s a very short bob (OK, not for everyone) or lots of texture and disconnection there’s a shift happening. Versatility will be key. Men’s hair, while all over the place lately (long, short and somewhere in between), still trends toward a classic fade and tapered haircut. They are timeless, sophisticated, and versatile. Oh yeah, they're versatile, too. With warmer days ahead, those of you with longer hair will be wanting to get it up off your neck. I found a great “How To” guide for a French Roll hairstyle. The best part is the messier the twist the better. With just a few bobby pins, a wrap and a roll (maybe a little texture spray), and you're done. Round brush? Square brush? Boar bristle brush? Paddle brush? WHAT!?!? I have something that will hopefully help you find the right brush for your hair type. I also have articles for you on physical signs you might be more stressed than you realize, finasteride and depression, and the “Rachel”. As always, I am available by email, text or phone if you have any questions or concerns. Looking forward to seeing you soon! Be well. Take Hair! AND #MaskUp 😷 What's Inside This Month

Springtime Spring Forward Spring Training Spring is in the (h)Air! Spring Fever "It's a spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want to — oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!" - Mark Twain Hello Spring! I don’t know about you, but I cannot believe it is already (finally - however you want to look at it) March. I am ready for the newness of what this time of year brings. I am also feeling more hopeful that we are getting to the other side of this pandemic. A little over a year ago many of you were sent home to set up your “home offices”. In March of last year, the first shelter in place order was issued, closing down many businesses for what we thought would be a couple weeks, which then became an indefinite period of time. Slowly, ever so slowly, we were allowed to reopen only with the angst of not knowing if and when we would be shut down once again. Needless to say it was quite a roller-coaster. Nevertheless, we preservered, survived if you will, and are now coming out the other side. Life, as we knew it, will not be what it once was. The road ahead is uncertain. So, YES, this spring is a long-awaited time for regrowth and new beginnings. How many of you had middle parts growing up? I know I did. I just recently heard that in the 90’s it was called the Butt Cut. The Butt Cut? What the heck, man! Apparently, Gen Z now wants to take credit the middle part. Sorry. NO! Check out “Excuse Me? Gen Z didn’t invent the middle part.” Almost everyone has thought about going blonde. I’ve been blonde a few times myself. If you've even been the slightest bit tempted you’ll want to read the article I have for you on 5 truths you should know before going blonde. Bangs! Who hasn't thought about having bangs. They come in all shapes and sizes (lengths). And certainly are not for everyone. Those of you wanting to make a dramatic change, curtain bangs might just be the answer. I also have articles for you on common scalp conditions, “mallen streaks”, greasy hair facts & hacks, making the most out of your lockdown outings, procrastination, a recipe for a super simple pot pie, and some history on red hair. As always, I am available by email, text or phone if you have any questions or concerns. Looking forward to seeing you soon! Be well. Take Hair! AND #MaskUp 😷 What's Inside This Month
Newsletter Archive: an index of all my newsletter articles, recipes, and episodes from 2014 through 2021 HOPE Hold. On. Pain. Ends. Hello. Hello. Hello. It feels so great to be back! AND you can get your hair done now, too! We made it to February. Whew! Not without a few “hiccups”, though. But, we made it! A client shared that they celebrated the Inauguration as the beginning of 2021. Not January 1st, but January 20th. Hearing that made complete sense. The Inauguration really was a new beginning. Last year was very difficult for so many of us and we really needed something to shift. The COVID-19 Vaccine has also given many of us a hopeful outlook for the future that we haven’t had in quite a while. There’s still a long road ahead, but at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Parting in sweet sorrow. The time with my Mother was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. I have not been able to spend that much time with her since I moved out West in 1985. One of the blessings of a locked-down world. We accomplished all we set out to do, and boy was there a list. We went through the house from top to bottom and nothing was left untouched. There are a few things I need to help list and sell (a couple cameras, an inversion rack, and a turkey fryer), but that’s really all. I know Mom will confirm this, there was a real sense of accomplishment. It wasn't all work. We went for a couple drives, grabbed a few meals out (take-out, that is), sat on the front stoop and soaked in the morning sun, and even watched a small heard of deer one morning just beyond the back fence. Now, that was special. I’ll be going back again in the Summer for a couple weeks. In the mean time, we’re continuing our twice a day phone calls. As always, I’ve put together some articles I hope you’ll find helpful and interesting. I have articles for you on silicones in hair products, messy buns, apple cider vinegar, how to get the haircut you'll love, beards, mullets, and more. Like said above, it is really great to be back at work. I am really, really, really looking forward to seeing you! As always, I am available by email, text or phone if you have any questions or concerns. Looking forward to seeing you soon! Be well. Take Hair! AND #MaskUp 😷 What's Inside This Month
Hello 2021! Last year was not an easy year by any means. We've loved. We’ve lost. And we’ve found new ways to cherish what is so dear to us. I have been reminded time and time again that tomorrow is promised to no one. This wonderful quote says it so well: "Tomorrow isn't promised to us. So live as if today is your last day on earth. Love like you've never loved before. Dream deeper than you've ever imagined you could dream. Experience all that your heart desires. If tomorrow you wake and everything still remains, at least your living now!“ - Gregory James Upson Moving forward, like the photo above says, “We’re all going to walk in real slow. Be good. Be quiet. Don’t. Touch. Anything.” We are not out of the woods yet so we must continue to be diligent in our behaviors and habits. We cannot let our guard down. I am going to do all in my power to remain physically healthy and mentally present. I wish the same for each of you. With San Francisco, and the State of California, basically shutting down I headed to Colorado to see my Mother a couple weeks early. I think I’ll get a full 6 weeks with her instead of the month I’d original planned. And boy has she put me to work. The two of us together have tackled the many, many projects no one is capable of doing on their own. Most of what we’ve sorted through and cleared out is being donated to The Fort Lyon Supportive Residential Community. They provide recovery oriented transitional housing to individuals experiencing homelessness. My Dad was a very generous and giving person so I know he would approve. We’ve talked about a day trip or two, but with the current COVID situation any travels will be taken (if at all) with the utmost caution. My plans are still to be back in San Francisco by the 23rd. I’m paying close attention to any further extensions of the Stay-at-Home orders. If anything happens to change or delay my return you will be the first to know. Not being able to see you in the salon, I’m doing my best to bring you articles I hope you’ll find interesting. I have 2 different articles on 2021 forecasts. One on hair color trends and the other on men’s short haircuts for the coming year. The hair color article takes an interesting look at your hair color habits from last year. Did you know natural red hair was more fragile than other hair colors? I knew it was rare and tends to be frizzy, but even I learned a thing or two from the Ginger Parrot article I have for you. I’ve known about this for a while, but didn’t know just how serious the situation had become. Many curlies have been “betrayed” and left in tears by one of the major curl care companies. Check out the article I have for you about their journey. If you need a recommendation for your curly locks, let me know. That reminds me to ask you to check the ingredients in your hair care products. You read food labels, but you should also be reading the ingredient labels of your hair care products. Many scalp and skin issues can be traced back to an allergic reaction from your hair products. Manufactures are continually reformulating their products and the ingredients. On their own many ingredients are harmless BUT when they come in contact with something as simple as water (or heat) a chemical change happens and they become toxic. Case in point is a Class Action Lawsuit against TRESemmé Keratin Hair Smoothing Shampoo and TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Color Shampoo. You’ll want to check out that article. I also have articles for you on air-drying fine hair, why some go gray in their 20's, a little reminder to stay in touch with your emotions during this pandemic, iconic hairstyles form the 70's, and more. Oh, and a few "Best Ofs" from last year. As always, I am available by email, text or phone if you have any questions or concerns. Looking forward to seeing you in the coming year! Be well. Take Hair! AND #MaskUp 😷 HAPPY NEW YEAR!
12/1/2020 0 Comments As the Chair Turns - December 2020Is the year really coming to an end? It has been a year to remember, that’s for sure. I think I’ve mentioned this before. I have really missed you. Seeing your smiling eyes (because I can’t see your actual smiles yet) has been a real pick-me up. In beauty school we were reminded there are very few professions where someone is allowed to place their hands on another person. Cosmetologists, aka hairstylist, are one of those few professions. We were already a touch deprived society. This pandemic has emphasized this even more. Besides taking care of your hair needs, I hope I'm helping to reduce or alleviate this in some small way. As always I have quite a variety of articles for you. The hair you might be losing during and because of this pandemic is to be expected. When we experience stress over an extended period of time, our stress hormones kick in to overdrive. This “shock hair loss” is a temporary hair loss from excessive shedding due to a shock to the system. The good news is that this type of hair loss will reverse once these “stressors” are alleviated. In the mean time, we need to be patient with ourselves, stay calm, and practice good stress management. It might be getting cooler out, but that is not a reason why your hair style has to be sacrificed. I have an article with amazing haircut ideas, short and long, for this winter. For you guys that are enjoying your hair a little longer, have I got a “Hollywood” hair cut idea for you. Barber? Stylist? Have you ever wondered what the difference was or if there even was a difference. Fret no more. I have an infograph and more to help you with your questions. Some of you may be experiencing a little flaking on your scalp this winter. Is it dandruff or just a dry scalp? Hopefully the article I have for you will help answer any question or concerns you might have. I don’t know if you knew this, but beard growing and hair trimmers were some of the most searched Men’s Grooming questions. They were way up over last year. I’ve been wanting to re-share an article about San Francisco’s Crosstown Trail but I hesitated because of the pandemic. But, what the heck. With some planning, calling ahead to restaurants, and of course a mask, a little fresh air might just be what the doctor ordered. I also have articles for you on the fastest way to blow dry your hair without damage, top hair dryers, a delicious recipe that I made, and a memorable look at hairstyles from the 1950’s. And don’t forget I will be away December 25th through January 23rd so plan your appointments now for the Holidays. As always, I am available by email, text or phone if you have any questions or concerns. Be well. Take Hair! AND #MaskUp 😷 And HAPPY HOLIDAYS! What's Inside This Month
