“There has also been a shift towards more relaxed and casual grooming and styling trends, reflecting changes in work environments and lifestyle preferences,” Garcia added. “We’ve seen an enormous explosion in the men’s grooming category during the past 10 years,” concurred Laurence Hegart, co-founder of Reuzel, a men’s grooming line. “There’s been a huge increase in the number of barbershops, and hair salons that have dedicated male grooming areas.” Sam Lewkowict, co-founder of Black Wolf Nation, told Happi, men have just entered one of the most competitive dating landscapes in human history. “You’re not just competing with your peers for women, you are now competing with the world— men will need to step up how they look and smell,” he observed. “It’s not necessarily a good thing for our society, but online dating and the increased time spend on those platforms have made products like our more necessary.” 2/23/2024 The 5 Best AI Hairstyle Apps for MenGet a virtual hairstyle consultation with the help of these 5 AI hairstyle tools. Here are some of our top picks: 2/3/2024 The Gory History of Barber SurgeonsWhy surgery and barbering were one occupation in the Middle Ages Beginning around the 12th century CE, the professions of barber and surgeon were combined into a single occupation throughout much of Europe. And, as this animation from TED-Ed explores, while being on the receiving end of a medical procedure performed by one of these ‘barber-surgeons’ was certainly an unideal place to find oneself, this class of generalists did make notable contributions to the medical field. This slice-of-history video tracks the profession’s rise within monasteries to its dissolution in the 18th century as surgery became more specialized, and how the red-and-white barber pole is a symbol of the barber-surgeon’s legacy. 1/1/2024 What is Patch Testing?"At any point, you can develop an allergy to something" Don't think just because you've used a certain brand of hair color before you're in the clear. Even if you've already had a particular hair-coloring service in the past, you should always do a patch test first. Companies tend to switch up their formulas often. What is Patch Testing?
Patch testing is a procedure used by our hair stylists and colour technicians before applying hair colour to the scalp. It is a simple and safe way of identifying whether the hair dye that the stylist intends to use will cause an allergic reaction with the skin. The reason patch testing is used is to ensure that the chemicals in the hair dye are safe to use on the client. Why is it Necessary? Patch testing is essential to ensure that the active ingredient, Paraphenylenediamine, does not cause an allergic reaction. Paraphenylenediamine is an active ingredient that is often used in hair dyes as it produces a very natural look. Hair salons will use a patch test to ensure the safety of their clients by using a small amount to see if the Paraphenylenediamine in the hair dye causes a reaction on the skin. A patch test is only required when hair dye comes into contact with the scalp. However it is still important to do a patch test for other colour treatments such as hair highlights where foils are used, as the foils can leak and come into contact with the skin. What Does it Involve? The patch test will usually be done 48 hours prior to the appointment. If the test produces a reaction the client’s skin then the hair dye should not be applied. Prior to the patch test the stylist will ask you a few questions to ensure that it is safe for us to apply the colour sample to your skin for the patch test. The stylist will then apply a small amount the hair dye mixture on the skin, usually in the crook of the arm will and advise the client that it should not be washed for the next 1 hour. What are the Risks? Reaction from Paraphenylenediamine usually just results in dermatitis to the eyelids or ears. It may also result in swelling to the face. A severe allergic reaction to Paraphenylenediamine could result in contact urticaria and in extreme cases, anaphylaxis. People working with Paraphenylenediamine can develop a sensitivity resulting in Dermatitis in the hand. What Should I Do if I Have a Reaction? If you do have an allergic reaction to the patch test you will not be able to use any oxidation type hair dyes. You should also alert your Doctor to let them know that you have had an allergic reaction to Paraphenylenediamine. |
