10 Hair Tips for Rainy Days...

10 Hair Tips for Rainy Days...
from Jennifer Knightstep

You’ve just spent half an hour straightening your hair when you hear that first ominous roll of thunder, and you wish right then and there you had a long list of hair tips for rainy days to keep your hair from going flat or frizzy. Well, my darling, I can help! After experimenting with various means of keeping my hair sleek and straight (or at least cute!) in the worst rainy weather, I’ve got that list for you. Here are 10 hair tips for rainy days… put down that flat iron and let’s go!

1. Start with a Heat Protectant
The first tip for accomplishing sleek, shiny straight hair on even the dampest of days is to start with a heat protector, while your hair’s still damp. I love the Macadamia Heat Protection Serum by Carol’s Daughter, but if you prefer a spray rather than a serum, try Bumble & Bumble’s Prep.

2. Blow It Completely Dry
This hair tip for rainy days makes sense, when you think about it. Before you put the hair dryer down, make sure your hair is completely, absolutely desert-dry.  I’m guilty of turning off the dryer before my hair’s quite dry, because I get lazy, but on a rainy day, this is sure to spell frizz-type disaster.

3. Use an anti-frizz Serum
Ah, yes, speaking of frizz, now is the time to break out your favorite anti-frizz product. My favorite is Ouidad’s Climate Control Frizz & Flyaway Fighter Taming Shine Spray… it does exactly what the name implies… but if you have another fave, go for it!  Apply with a light hand, and let’s move on to our next rainy day hair tip.

4. Don’t Overdo the Product!
Remember when I said to apply your anti-frizz product with a light hand? That goes for any product you’ll use on this ultra-humid frizz-inducing rainy day. Aside from your anti-frizz product, all you’ll need is a very light mist of finishing spray.

5. Wait to Cool and Dry
Now that you’ve finished drying, flattening, and spraying your hair, you’re ready to go, right? Nope. Let’s wait about five minutes to make sure your hair is completely cooled (sealing the cuticle to fight frizz) and dry (from the little bit of product you’ve used). Now’s the perfect time to search for your favorite wellies and umbrella!  After the five minutes is up, you’re ready to go.

6. Use an Umbrella
Perhaps this hair tip for rain days doesn’t even need to be mentioned, but rather than destroying your lovely sleek do by wearing a rain hat, opt for an umbrella instead. I don’t care how cute that hat is, unless you plan to wear it all day, leave it at home.

7. No Touchy!
As you head out the door, your first instinct may be to touch your tresses and see how they’re holding up. Don’t do it! The oils from your hands will encourage your hair to frizz, and that’s the LAST thing you want!

8. Braid It Back!
What if you don’t have time to re-do your hair into its usual straight sleekness? Maybe it’s time to try this rainy day hair tip, and embrace this summer’s Katniss-inspired braid trend. Pull your hair back into a pretty French braid, or pull it over one shoulder in a loose, breach-y herringbone or fishtail. Gorgeous! Let the rain fall!

9. Try an Updo
Not too sure of your braiding skills? Then opt for a simple updo, like a messy bun or even just a cute, sporty high ponytail. In fact, the ponytail may be an excellent way to channel a little Olympic sportiness and support your favorite athlete this summer! It’s rain in London, too, you know…

10. Go with It!
My boyfriend swears I look sexy when I’ve been unprepared for a summer deluge and get caught in the rain. If you’re not on your way to the office, or anywhere special, why not let the warm summer rain dampen your tresses? Your man might like the look, too…

Now that you know how to handle your hair on a rainy, humid day, do you feel more confident, or are you still fearful of frizz?  Be bold, sweetie, these hair tips for rainy days are all tried and true!

Men's Grooming:  7 Common Mistakes Made When Choosing a Hairstyle

Picture
Many men make common mistakes when updating a hairstyle. Several factors come into play when making this decision, and not all guys take these key things into account. To avoid making a mistake, read the following questions and the go to town with your stylist:

Is this hairstyle age appropriate for me?
Many men will choose a style that does not translate well for their age. Picking a young hairstyle does not make you look younger if anything it makes you look older and like you’re trying too hard.

Does the hairstyle fit your lifestyle?
If you’re a low maintenance type or an outdoor person, picking a hairstyle that requires a lot of up keep or tons of product probably isn’t your best choice. You should always ask yourself if you’re willing to put in the time to achieve the look. Similarly, if you’re a wake up and go person a high maintenance hairstyle isn’t for you. Choose one that you can get the look you want with the least amount of fuss.

Do you have the right texture or thickness of hair for this particular hairstyle?
This is very important. If you don’t have the right hair type to support the style it will never come out the way you expect. You will end up disappointed in your choice, and also in your stylist for not warning you that your hair can’t do what you want it to do.

Do you like using hair product?
If you don’t like using hair products, choosing a style that requires using them won’t be a great choice, as you’ll end up hating the way you look. Know what you want your hair to do and what it will take to keep it that way.

Is your hair thinning?
If so, choose a short style closer to the scalp. Trying to keep it longer and conceal the fact your losing it won’t fool anyone. Embrace what you have and your inability to change it, then, choose a style that doesn’t accentuate the fact it’s thinning. If chosen well, people will not notice what you lack; rather they will notice what you have.

Is the hairstyle dated or dead?
If the hairstyle you’re sporting topped the trend charts during the 80s or 90s and has yet to make its comeback, it’s better to leave that style in the past. Nobody will admire you’re nod to the mullet, flattop, or frat boy fade.

How does your man/woman like your hair?
If you’re someone who doesn’t care what anyone thinks, more power to you. However, if you are one to please, ask what style they would like to see on you. They might not be your ultimate solution, but if anything they will appreciate that you care enough to take their opinion into consideration.

Keep in mind that if you have any concerns with what you have chosen, ask your stylist any or all of these questions and get their input – it could mean the difference between a symphony and a train wreck.

7 Pretty (and Practical) Gym Hairstyles

Picture
Ok, let's be honest: even though your workout sessions are for focusing on your fitness goals, you also want to look cute.  It’s not just a vanity thing; you’re pretty sure you can stay in plank for way longer when your hair looks good. That’s just science.

But it’s not good enough to rock an adorable workout hairstyle if it falls out the second you break a sweat. So I’ve rounded up seven favorite beautiful—and practical—gym hairstyles.  Prepare to get totally inspired.

A Perky Pony
The classic high ponytail is still a gym staple. Update it a bit by adding texture with a texturizing spray. To forgo any product, just brush hair back into an elastic with your fingertips to create that similar effect.

A Tight Fishtail
Loose side braids can fall out while working out. Instead, opt for a tight fishtail that's funkier and will last throughout your training session.
How To Do A Fishtail Braid

A Ballet Bun
It's a classic because it works, keeping hair up and off the face and neck. Now take it from ballerina to messy chic by roughing up the texture on top and leaving a few strands loose.

A Side French Braid
Tired of bangs in your eyes when you work out?  Braid right at the hairline, continuing down for a gorgeous side braid.

A Twisted Bun
No time to shampoo after a workout? Try a twisted bun with bobby pins. Once you're done, take out the clips, and voila loose, lived-in waves.
4 Tricks For Gorgeous Post-Workout Hair

A Pretty Headband
Dress up a boring ponytail with a simple headband. Go with black or add fun color to jazz it up a bit.

A Braided Ponytail
No need to worry about loose strands falling out of a pony with this braid/ponytail hybrid. To recreate, just tilt your head forward and start braiding from the bottom, working your way up.

Unusual use for coconut oil: Smooth split ends

Coconut oil has been shown to effectively penetrate the hair shaft and help prevent damage.

It can be very heavy, though!  I recommend warming up a pea sized amount between your hands and then rubbing it through the ends of your hair. It seems to work best when your hair is nice and dry - if it's wet the coconut oil will have a hard time sinking in.

If you have super fine hair, it might be a good idea to do it as an overnight treatment and wash your hair in the morning. Thicker hair can use coconut oil as a nice leave in conditioner, though!

Also: if you go multiple days between washings and you get frizzy ends, a teensy bit of coconut oil can help calm them down a bit.

* Unrefined coconut oil is normally a very bright white color and quite solid at room temperature. This type of coconut oil is often called "virgin" or "extra virgin". It smells and tastes very strongly of coconut. This is the preferred coconut oil type for all beauty/body applications because it is less processed.
