Winter has already set in! This is a time when our hair needs to look its very best, despite the cold weather outside.
Not only does winter affect your skin, it also causes problems for your hair. Therefore, it’s time to talk about winter haircare. “You may already moisturize your skin during the winter months BUT what to do about your hair and scalp?” To help you sparkle this season, we’ve put together TOP 10 TIPS about how to keep your locks looking A-grade all winter! #1 Keep Your Home Warm but NOT Hot Make sure you don’t get a temperature shock when you get home or when you’re going out. If the temperature inside your house or apartment is much warmer than outside it can irritate your skin and scalp. #2 Turn the Hot Water Down BRRRR… It’s cold, we know! A really hot shower feels so good on a cold weather day. BUT if you wanna care for your scalp, you should turn the temperature of your shower down. Hot water is neither good for your skin or your hair. Hot water dehydrates your skin and hair. It’s actually like cooking the moisture out of your skin, creepy right?! Well, to help temper your use of hot water, keep the water heater at the same position all year round OR even better, see if you can edge it down in the fall and winter season. #3 Wash Your Hair to a Minimum How often are you shampooing? Well, in the cold weather season we found, that if you’re shampooing your hair two or three times a week, you can prevent your hair from drying out too much. #4 Oil Your Hair During the winter season your scalp will be drier and that can lead to dandruff and scalp irritation, which in the worst-case scenario can lead to hair fall. No matter how busy you are, really don’t forget the oil your hair needs. It’s really important to keep your scalp moisturized! Use olive or coconut oil, massage it into your scalp and leave it in for 20 minutes, and finally rinse it out with shampoo and conditioner. #5 Double Up On Conditioner Yup, conditioner is a must! We’ve said it before, conditioning your hair after shampooing should be an important part of your hair routine. During winter we recommend you to use a deep conditioner plus a leave in treatment, especially for those who are living up North. #6 Dry Your Hair Correctly When it comes to drying your hair, you should really treat your hair with care. Even though a blow dryer is the best tool if you wanna style your hair to perfection, it can also be really harmful for your hair as the heat can dry out your hair and scalp. Therefore, it’s important that you protect your hair with heat protection before you blow dry it. Keep in mind, that heat protection is as important as the actual blow-drying part! #7 Allow Your Hair to Air Dry If possible, it’s a good idea to let your hair air dry and limited your use of tools like dryers and flat irons. Still, be aware that going outside with wet hair in cold weather can cause your hair to freeze and break. So if you don’t have time for your hair to dry naturally before going out, then blow dry it and use the cool setting. Once again, remember to use pre-styling spray or a leave-in conditioner before blow drying. #8 Have Your Hair Trimmed Regularly Whether you have long or short hair, winter weather can make the ends of your hair dry and brittle. Regular trims will keep your hair in good condition and reduce the risk of split ends. #9 Throw On The Hat To be cool and warm! Well, when the wind starts to blow, it’s time to throw on the hat. Yeah, that means saying goodbye to that awesome hairdo you’ve spent all your morning creating. Still, wearing a hat can add an edge to your look. Just remember to pick a hat that fits your style and face shape! #10 Eat Balanced & Stay Hydrated Eating a healthy diet full of vitamins is the best way to keep your hair and scalp looking and feeling healthy. Also make sure you drink plenty of water to keep your hair and scalp hydrated. Well, are you set for the winter? Make these TOP TIPS a part of your hair care routine. A little extra care will make a big difference! (source)

Why Skipping the Conditioner is Destroying Your Hair Conditioner is a Whole Lot More Important than You Probably Know By Kendra Aarhus - Women's Hairstyles Expert Shampoo gets a whole lot of attention in the wide world of hair, and I really don't know why. It's just soap, really. Sure, a great shampoo is nice to have, but if you have to choose where to save your money and where to spend it, I'd put my cash in a great conditioner every single time.
Conditioner gets skipped by a lot of women (and men) in their hair routines. They think their hair is too short, too fine a texture, too greasy, or that it just doesn't tangle enough to need conditioner. Wrong, ladies. Just wrong. Everyone should be using conditioner, and I'm going to tell you why. It's true that conditioner is used for detangling, and it's also true that the wrong conditioner can weigh your hair down and make it greasy (or greasier), but skipping the conditioner all together means that you miss out on all the other benefits that it does for your hair's health. If you color your hair and aren't using a conditioner, you're probably also a victim of super fast color fade or highlights that get dried out and brassy. The reason? Shampoo is designed to clean your hair of oils, dirt, and other nasty things that build up on your hair. During the cleansing process the cuticle (the outer "shell" of your hair) of your hair is roughed up a bit. Conditioner helps balance the pH levels in your hair and smoothes that cuticle down, which helps preserve and lock in your hair color as well as the moisture balance in your hair. A smooth cuticle is healthier looking, shinier, and has better body and bounce. A roughed up cuticle can also be thanked for tangles in your hair. Imagine that the cuticle of each hair strand is like the shingles on a rooftop; all those shingles are supposed to be smoothed down and pointing in the same direction (down). A roughed up cuticle looks like a tornado ran across those shingles, causing several to curl up or even break off over time. If you put several hundred hairs with curled up cuticles together, those roughed up pieces begin to stick and catch on one another. Using conditioner helps to ensure that the cuticle lays smooth to the surface, preventing tangles and allowing tangles to release easily. Many conditioners come with extra benefits like UV protection and essential nutrients for keeping your hair and scalp healthy and manageable. Conditioners are really the base to your styling routine; fighting frizz, defining curl, or increasing volume. There are a lot of women out there skipping the conditioner regardless, because they claim that it's just too heavy and greasy on their hair. Most of the time, the conditioner that you're using isn't appropriate for your hair type. It's essential to find the right conditioner, use it correctly (after shampooing the right way), and rinse it very, very well to get the most benefit out of the product. The number one issue that I've found with conditioner is that it's not being rinsed properly. A solid 30-60 second rinse in warm to cool water is essential to seal the cuticle. (If you have naturally curly hair, you won't want to rinse your conditioner out completely. A quick rinse will help keep your curls hydrated and have the added benefit of a leave in conditioner.) If you feel like your conditioner is too heavy, try a lighter moisture conditioner and be sure to use a clarifying treatment on your hair regularly to prevent conditioner (and other products) from building up on your hair. Talk to your hair stylist about the conditioners that they would recommend for your unique hair type. Damage is visible and there is no hiding the torn ends, the frizzy dry locks and the breakage. Damage is caused from so many every day hair battles, even the weather plays havoc with our hair. Maybe you have performed a home color that has gone drastically wrong or perhaps you fancied a change and decided to switch your hair color from red to blonde! Damage to your hair is in some circumstances unavoidable and the only way to move is forward. Yes, of course even the most damaged hair can be repaired - patience, time investment and a new attitude towards your locks are imperative.
Product Investment Invest in a hair mask to strengthen and add moisture to your locks. This will be one of the best hair investments that you will make and will be game changing to your damaged locks. Take advice from stylists and read the reviews on these products before purchasing, most importantly ensure that the product is suited to your hair type. A deep conditioning hair treatment penetrates the cuticles and repairs the hair from within, to begin with, you may need to use the mask on every occasion after washing. As time moves on and your hair becomes less damaged you should only need to use the mask weekly as a more preventative and moisture boosting product. Salon Treatments Visiting your salon for a treatment is always advisable, whilst you can treat your hair at home, there is something to be said to the stronger blast of treatment that can be performed in the salon. You can kick start your hair repair program with a more intense salon treatment and then maintain at home. After every color treatment you should treat your hair to an in salon boost. Gently Does It Hair always requires TLC but when it is in need of repair you should be even more cautious. Using a towel to pat your hair dry rather than roughly drying it is always a good start. Don’t yank through your tresses with a comb, instead use a detangling solution and a soft hairbrush and slowly tease any difficult areas. Heat Whilst your hair is in need of repair, be more mindful than ever of the damaging effects of excess heat. You will notice a fast and significant improve in the condition of your hair if it is not dried out through being subjected to intense heat. Chop It Off Worst case scenario however in some instances this is utterly unavoidable. There are times when you have to assess your hair and make the decision as to how badly in need of repair it is. Is there a chance that you need to remove all damage and begin again - there is a possibility that this may be a faster and much more effective way of resuming your hair to good condition. Consider hair extensions and clip-ins if necessary. Lay Off The Color Opt for darker colors if you really must color your hair. Avoid coloring unless absolutely necessary, particularly lightening products which are the cause of so much damage. A good piece of advice would be to adapt your color to ensure that you only have to color re-growth at the root. You will most certainly reap the hair rewards. It’s a quick and easy way to get fresher and cleaner-looking hair without going through the hassle of wet washing. It’s an effective way to avoid frequent shampooing, which strips the scalp and hair shafts of its natural oil and can lead to unpleasant overproduction of oil. Just-washed hair is a nightmare to style, so dry shampoo is helpful for getting the cooperativeness of slightly greasy hair without the look.
Dry shampoo works by putting an oil-absorbing substance at the root of the hair, which then gets brushed, combed, or blown through the hair. It disappears, along with the extra oil, and leaves the hair shaft feeling and looking less greasy. It’s important to note that dry shampoo is not meant to be a substitute for wet washing. It's easy to make your own Dry Shampoo power at home. It can be customized for hair color and scented with your favorite essential oils. Written by Menswear Style When it comes to growing long hair, it looks its best with soft natural layers - looking as it would if you started from scratch with a one grade all over and just let it all grow out. When grown this way, long hairstyles adhere to our head shapes and hairlines, best complementing our natural features. For this feature we spoke to Alex Glover, the Master Barber at Murdock Londonto gain his expert insights. 1. Mop-top The best method to grow your hair out whilst maintaining a natural look is with a round layer. As soon as you decide you want a longer hairstyle, begin by asking your barber for this with a crop at 3-6 cm, leaving more of a mop-top finish (see old images of the Beatles as they morphed from clean cut boys into hippies for reference). 2. Chewed finish Ok, so hair fringes have the potential to look great on men but I believe they’re best worn with a bold, blunt and chewed finish. 3. Leave it lone Often along the growing journey men will fall for short back and sides cuts in order to achieve some degree of a style whilst still trying to grow their hair out to a desired longer length. These temporary looks tend to graduate in at the edges or have harsh corners, which means that the layers do not grow out as befitting as they would naturally. Avoid trying to craft a style mid-way through the growth phase, as you will often find yourself left with unwanted corners of weight that tend to form wing-like shapes or a dreaded big mushroom effect. 4. Tidy-up if required Whilst avoiding visiting your barber for a drastic mid-growth re-style, broken ends (the man's version of split ends if you like) can lead to splitting all the way down to the root if not treated correctly, so do consider a subtle tidy-up trim to help keep your hair as healthy as possible as it grows. 5. Shampoo & Conditioner The longer your hair gets, the more susceptible it is to look limp and lifeless, so a good quality Shampoo and Conditioner should not be avoided. Always use both (if your hair is dirty) or stick to just conditioner (if you washed it yesterday). For longer curls, invest in a deeply moisturizing product or specific curl activating hair care. 6. Layering If your hair is particularly thick, a heavier layer is required - this layer is cut nearest to vertical - enabling the layers to stack on top of each other over a short area. This prevents strange looking, unmanageable build-ups of weight. These heavy layers then need texturizing deeply to soften out the baseline of the haircut (where the layers end on your shoulders), otherwise it can look a bit feminine from behind. 7. Sea Salt Spray When it comes to styling finer hair, Sea Salt Spray will soon become your favourite go-to product. It helps to make fine hair appear thicker and prevent your style from immediately falling flat once you step out the house. You can trust it to help maintain your shape over the course of the day. 8. Application & Process All hair types can however benefit from using Sea Salt Spray to add texture, blow-drying it in to wet hair before styling to give a boost to the body. Alternatively apply to dry hair to better increase volume and create a matte effect. Depending on your style, you may also wish to work the spray in by hand to design your own natural wave and create a textured body 9. Complimentary Products With Sea Salt Spray providing a great foundation for your style, the best finishing products to use on long hair are crème waxes (such as Murdock Hair Play) which help to control frizzing and provide a soft, lightweight texture and a natural shine. They also add further weight which can help to keep your style tucked back. Don’t be afraid to be fairly heavy-handed over the sides and stay looser on the top to create more of a wave effect. 10. Brush it Remember to regularly brush or comb your hair to help maintain a voluminous natural shape. At home it's best to use a brush because they work well to smooth out hair cuticles and they don't pull on hair as much as combs. When you're out and about however, a longer haired gent's best friend can be the Kent comb he keeps in his top pocket. (source) |
